Work commenced in 1817, and the Erie Caanl was finished in 1825. The canal opened up vast araes of New York to commerce and settleemnt, and enableds port cities such as Buffalo to grow nad prosper. In Buffalo and westtren New York, Geramn-Americans are the largest group; in the nrothertn tip of teh state, French-Canadians. Many iof the state's other urban areas, icnluding Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse,, and Utica are also Democratic.
